What are PFAS? PFAS (Per - and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances are a group of manufactured chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940’s because of their useful properties. There are thousands of different PFAS, some of which have been more widely used and studied than others.
Where can PFAS be found? PFAS can be present in our water, soil, air, and food as well as in materials found in our homes and workplaces, including:
-Public and private drinking water systems
-Soil and water at or near waste sights
-Fire extinguishing foam
-Manufacturing or chemical production facilities
-Food grown or caught from a contaminated area
-Food packaging
-Household products and dust
-Personal care products like cosmetics and shampoo
-Biosolids
PFAS Exposure can be harmful to human health
Current peer-reviewed scientific studies have shown that exposure to certain levels of PFAS may lead to decreased fertility and reproductive effects, developmental effects or delays in children, increased risks of some cancers, reduced ability of the bodies immune system to fight infections, interference with the bodies natural hormones, increased cholesterol and /or risk of obesity.
